Moonlight Catfish Derby Results

On June 10-11 the moonlight catfish tournament was held to help acquire
breeding age catfish for the Columbia park juvenile pond enhancement project.
The tournament was a great success.  Twenty-seven entrants joined in from surrounding areas and competed for big fish, accumulated weight trophies, and cash awards.

The Catch

Only 15 contestants returned to the weigh in site at Columbia point at 2:00 pm Saturday with live catfish to be stocked in the pond.   A total of 157 fish were brought to scale and had a total weight of 753.5 lbs.  Ninety-eight live catfish, of which 13 were specially tagged, were safely transported and released into the Columbia park pond by WDFW fisheries employees Paul Hoffarth and Tammy Gish.  Special thanks to Paul and Tammy for their hard work and vigilance in this project and to all who participated. A child's fishing experience will be greatly enhanced as a result of these efforts.

The Winners

The winners were Trace Lundberg of Everett WA with the big fish weight of 16.6 lbs and Darren Mayer (Tri-Cities) with most accumulated weight of 29 fish at 141.2 lbs. Congratulations to the winners!  Other big fish catches were Don Kearns, 16.2, Neil Sullivan 14.12, Dan Mayer 13.04, Ryan Jackson 13.04 lbs. Other weight totals were Ryan Jackson 120.12, Neil Sullivan 97.06, Dan Mayer 77.2, Ron Rhoads 58.4 lbs. Guessed weight fish was 7lbs and was tied with Trace Lundberg 7.2 and Neil Sullivan 6.14.  A breaker was held on what fish in the pool weighed 3 lbs with Trace wining that event too!

Fish Fry

Fifty-nine of the catfish died and were filleted for the pot-luck or dispersed to the contestants.  Darren Mayer filleted most of the catfish and Richard Sharp deep fried them and a few fillets of salmon. The potluck was fantastic! For those that didn't make it, you missed a great event.
