Steelhead Derby

The Largest Steelhead Tournament

On October 20, 2012 the Largest Steelhead contest was held. Weather was anything but nice with a cold front moving in bringing with it wind at 15-20+ mph and rain with overcast skies. The tournament began at 12:00 midnight Saturday morning with many anglers braving the elements in the early morning hours.

The Fishermen

Seventeen dedicated anglers attempted to bring in the largest steelhead of the day.    Fisherman worked the McNary pool area and Walla-Walla river with a few fishing the Ice Harbor pool.  Richard Sharp and Rick Mares fished the Ice Harbor pool and each landed large unclipped steelhead and they were released.
Approximately 10 anglers were fishing together at McNary when an apparent winning fish was taken by Desirae Baird fishing with her partner Kyle Pease II.  They braved the wind and rain under a tarp all through the night and when the fish was caught all other contestants conceded their loss and did not return to the scales.

The Winner

The weigh in was at 4 pm and Kyle and Desirae stormed in with just minutes to spare and as no other fish were brought to scale.  Desirae's fish of 10lb -5 0z was declared winner.
which were excellent

Pot Luck

Richard Sharp prepared chili and cornbread which were excellent for the return contestants and assistants .  Special thanks to Kirby Hammond, Ben Webb,  and Jim Cartmell who helped Richard Sharp produce this tournament. All who participated had a great time!
